We were friends, you and I.
No matter what lay between,
That much at least
Was always certain.

Love and pain and laughter
Hued and colored our days.
To call them halcyon is cliche.
Better to just acknowledge
They were spent in the best way.

Shed no tears for wasted years
As there is no such thing.
It is gone, pack it away
With all the other yesterdays.
Leave it where it sits.
Dear old friend, this is goodbye.
